about
Waves that break the silence. Thirsty jaws that extinguish all life. While at the same time the streets are empty and the night is still on the other side of the earth.
Boxing Day in 2004 was a day that for many were not about having a peaceful and quiet holiday. Instead many people woke up to a nightmare and many lives fell in ruins. I wasn't there, but like many Swedes knew someone who was there. Someone that ran in the wrong direction or was in the wrong place. That day it did not matter how strong you were or how loud you prayed. That day, the powers of nature were so much stronger than you.
Sarah is a song filled with contrasts: music in major scale - text in minor. Freshwater meets saltwater. To be in Sweden, a safe yet dark and cold place, or to be in a paradise turned into hell. Glittering guitars that lift you and softly pitched floor drums who want to communicate over long distances but do not arrive in time.
Writing Sarah was a work of sorrow. Sarah is not an autobiographical song. The name itself also has no meaning in relieving my loss, it's the music and poetry that gives me a healing effect. The fact that Sarah is released now, more than a decade after the disaster, does not matter either. Sarah is not about the tsunami. It’s about different phases of a healing process. That's what Anna & the Sea explores: the private and self-experienced, but also the timeless and universal issues that we all question ourselves.
Anna & the Sea is the solo project of Anna Lindström, that was a wild fancy less than a year ago and has now materialized in her debut EP Söräng.
The songs are written and produced entirely by herself, recorded together with a number of friends and familiar faces from the Swedish music scene like Peter Morén of Peter Bjorn and John, drummer Ola Winkler (Ane Brun, Veronica Maggio), Nils Berg (Håkan Hellström) and Fredrik Hermansson (Ane Brun) playing organ and piano.
The result is indie-pop - rhythmic, complex and dreamlike all at the same time, with a stripped-down but sublime production that gives room to Anna’s unmistakable vocals that have been compared to both Kate Bush and Lana Del Rey.
Her debut single “Lake Como” and the sequel “The Sun Is Shining For You” was released earlier this year and got picked up by Swedish national radio and found fans amongst music blogs and magazines such as HYMN, Mystic Sons, Medium, Popmuzik, Popmani, and Indietronica. “Picking Up A Dream” from the debut EP was featured by Spotify in their Indie Highlights.
Originally from a small town in Sweden, Anna moved to Stockholm, getting involved early in the music scene as a singer and background singer in different bands, as a sound engineer, radio show host, music journalist, and DJ. Secretly, she has been working on her own material for what feels like since high school, but it never felt like the right place or time to put everything together, until now.
Sarah is the first single from the upcoming EP Out Of The Blue and is out on June 15th.
Anna & the Sea is independent and free from the structures of the music industry and releases her music entirely on her own label Birdtown Records.
